Photo Mosaic — one picture made of hundreds

We rebuild one photograph out of hundreds of your own. From across the room you see grandma's portrait, the wedding photo or the whole team; up close, every tile that makes it is a photo of one of the grandchildren, a day of the year, a match. It cannot be done by hand: nearly two thousand tiles, each in the right place. You upload two things. First the big picture that appears from a distance — crop it from the centre, the top or the bottom. Then the 20 to 120 photos that will build it. Each tile is cropped square and placed where its colour fits the big picture best; the same photo never sits beside or above itself, and no photo is used so often that it crowds out the others. The more photos, and the more varied, the better the mosaic. You choose 30, 40 or 50 tiles across: fewer tiles make every photo larger, more tiles make the big picture sharper. We can wash each tile lightly with its cell's colour — 0% is the honest mosaic, 25% is balanced, 50% makes the big picture easy to read but shifts the tiles' colours a little. We print no tile smaller than 8 mm; up close every tile should still read as a photograph. 30 × 40, 50 × 70 and 70 × 100 cm; matte poster paper, foam board or heavy card. Three layouts — full sheet, a title band underneath, and a hairline frame — and ten colours for the paper and the lettering. You see the whole mosaic in the preview before anything is printed; the print is drawn by the engine that drew the preview.
